DOI: 10.5935/abc.20170118 Introduction From the earliest days of the heart surgery, the valves, when the reparation was not possible, were replaced by prosthetics using cardiopulmonary bypass. The good results of these procedures are well known. In the recent years, minimally invasive alternatives have been developed, aiming to make possible the treatment of individuals under high risk of complications and death caused by the conventional procedure. In 2002, the first transcatheter valvar implantation was made, which revolutionized the treatment of severe aortic stenosis. The equipment, techniques and skills have progressively evolved since then. More recently, from 2009, transcatheter mitral valvar implants for treatment of the prosthesis dysfunction (valve-in-valve) started to be performed. Currently, the transcatheter valvar implantation is one of the fields of greater development in cardiology.

Emergency transapical mitral valve-in-valve implantation for bioprosthesis failure: transapical implantation of an Edwards Sapien-XT in a dysfunctional mitral bioprosthesis in a critical patient

Background: Valve-in-Valve (VIV) Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) is now the treatment of choice in high-surgical-risk patients with failing aortic bioprosthesis. Although less performed, VIV-Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement (TMVR) is a valid treatment option for selected high-risk patients with degenerated mitral bioprostheses. Several cases of elective ViVTAVR and -TMVR hav...

Concomitant Transapical Transcatheter Valve Implantations: Edwards Sapien Valve for Severe Mitral Regurgitation in a Patient with Failing Mitral Bioprostheses and JenaValve for the Treatment of Pure Aortic Regurgitation.

Transcatheter valve implantation is a novel interventional technique, which was developed as an  alternative therapy for surgical aortic valve replacement in inoperable patients with severe aortic stenosis. Despite limited experience in using transcatheter valve implantation for mitral and aortic regurgitation, transapical transcatheter aortic valve implantation and valve-in-valve implantation ...

Improvement of Mitral Regurgitation after Transapical Transcatheter Aortic Valve Bioprosthesis Implantation

Background/Introduction Implantation of transcatheter aortic bioprosthesis has become a procedure with increasingly relevance in medical practice for the treatment of aortic stenosis, especially in patients with high or prohibitive surgical risk for traditional surgery. The presence of mitral regurgitation (MR) may be associated with increased morbidity and mortality, however, some studies have...

Transapical aortic valve implantation: results of a Brazilian prosthesis.

OBJECTIVE The aortic valve replacement is a routine procedure with acceptable risk, but in some cases, such a risk can justify contraindication. The minimally invasive transcatheter aortic valve implantation has been viable, with lower morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to develop a national catheter-mounted aortic bioprosthesis for the aortic position implant. METHODS After a...

Transcatheter transapical valve-in-valve implantation for degenerated mitral bioprosthesis

A 76-year-old woman with a history of aortic and mitral valve (Mosaic 19 mm; Hancock II 25 mm bioprosthesis, Medtronic Inc., Minneapolis, Minnesota) replacement and former coronary artery bypass grafting in 2010 (left internal mammary artery-left anterior descending artery (LIMA-LAD), aorta-obtuse marginal coronary artery (Ao-OM)) was admitted to our hospital with recurrent pulmonary edema. Her...
